This movie is absolutely charming and filled with everyday magic. The characters are quirky and interesting. Though their quirkiness borders on plain old weird, I was instead charmed by them and draw into their story. In many ways, Amelie is a modern day fairy tale, filled with beauty and miracles.Amelie - TwoBoggySwampers
I was completely taken by surprise with this movie. I didn't know all that much about it and didn't hold many expectations. But what a delight it turned out to be. It is charming, cute, funny, bright, witty, creative, and different. I loved the use of colour in the film and the simplistic yet beautiful backgrounds throughout. The characters are absolutely fantastic and keep you glued to the story all the way to the very last second. I wouldn't miss this one.Fast and Gentle - Plastic_Penguin
The first 5 minutes bind you to your seat you as rapidly and as effectively as any superglue. The short, mundane, and surprisingly insightful description of each character's failings, habits, and passions are so wonderful to watch.
Amelie's camerawork is absolutely amazing, how they manage to get some of those shots is beyond me, but they were definitely the work of top-notch craftsmen. The colour pallete is bright in every scene. The angles are strange and the words spoken are idealistic and poetic. The combination makes the world appear like it's a dream; a dreamy 21 year old girl's surreal perception of reality. Speaking of whom, it's hard not to fall in love with the main character.
Watch it with subtitles, not just cause dubbs are usually weak, but in the case of this movie, hearing the characters speaking a language you don't understand adds an extra layer of surrealism to the whole thing.
I didn't give it 5 stars just cause the crush that Amelie had on that guy was almost like a 10 year old's first crush and I couldn't suspend my disbelief enough to accept it, sure it's cute, but I had trouble accepting that kind of playful and innocent affair between a beautiful young woman and a handsome young man, both in their early 20s, yes - even in a fairy tale.
Wow, I just read Coco's review, he must have a different copy of the film than the rest of us :)
