The Hunt for Red October
Based on Tom Clancy's bestseller, directed by John McTiernan (Die Hard ) and starring Sean Connery and Alec Baldwin, The Hunt For Red October seethes with high-tech excitement and sweats with the tension of men who hold Doomsday in their hands.
A new, technologically-superior Soviet nuclear sub, the Red October, is heading for the U.S. coast under the command of Captain Marko Ramius (Connery). The American government thinks Ramius is planning to attack. A lone CIA analyst (Baldwin ) has a different idea: he thinks Ramius is planning to defect, but he has only a few hours to find him and prove it-because the entire Russian naval and air commands are trying to find him, too. The hunt is on!

I'll be the first to admit that when I heard they were making this book into a movie I was skeptical. Classic movies that take place on submarines and naval ships all share one commonality - they're character driven. Thus in order for it to be successful, I knew it had to have a stellar cast, and it delivered, well, sort of.
Firstly, Sean Connery plays a Lithuanian with a Scottish accent. Strike one.
Secondly, Alec Baldwin gave such a good performance, he was subsequently replaced by Harrison Ford. Strike two.
Thirdly, Sam Neil (see my Dead Calm review). Strike three.
Despite these failings, this movie is somewhat entertaining. While it's not exactly Das Boot or the Sand Pebbles, it holds up well over time for what it is, mass-produced Clancy. One of Those Rare Films That Lives up to the Novel - Mookie
This is on my top ten list of "movies I could watch over and over again". I won't say it is the best movie I have seen but it is a movie that keeps you watching from start to finish with interesting scene after interesting scene. Each scene building the momentum and pulling you towards the satisfying climax.
The acting of all the leads is spot on. And even though I love Ford as Jack Ryan in the next two installments, Alec Baldwin is perfect in this movie as Ryan, the intelligence officer who gets in over his head.
After seeing the movie I read the novel and was impressed by how the movie captured the feel and all the main plot points of the book while still managing to trim off a lot of the book.
If you are any kind of fan of action thrillers you have to see this classic.Incredible! - PannaMoo
Every time I watch The Hunt For Red October, I sit on the edge of my seat. I am engrosed with each viewing and I have watched this movie dozens of times. Suspense, great storytelling and great acting combine to create one of the best movies I have ever seen. I loved this movie from the first time I watched it which suprised me greatly as I prefer old english murder mysteries and psychological thrillers. So, please, treat yourself to one of the all-time best movies.
