The Anniversary Party
It's not a party until something gets broken.
You're invited to a glamorous, star-studded Hollywood event that's about to go hilarious out-of-control. When novelist Joe (Alan Cumming) and his actress wife Sally (Jennifer Jason Leigh) throw themselves a party to celebrate the sixth anniversary of their turbulent marriage, both the hosts and the guests start telling each other the one thing they never hear in Hollywood - the truth. This scathingly funny dramady takes an unflinching look at new friends, old lovers, annoying neighbors, marriage and the movie business and features an all-star cast including Phoebe Cates, Kevin Cline, Gwyneth Paltrow, Parker Posey and John C. Reilly.

This is one of those very brilliant subversive American movies in the best tradition of its great subversive literature like Moby Dick and the The Scarlet Letter. Here Hollywood exposes itself and shows how deeply neurotic and humanly damaged the fantasy life of glamour, money, fame, and sex leaves all the people enmeshed in it become. It is brilliantly acted, superbly directed and sharply written.
Entertaining and gripping, always finely managed and constructed, it never hits false notes psychologically. The result is that while these people are easy to judge and condemn they are never less than recognisably human and sad, and sometimes even cross over into the tragic. This is a considerable achievement of self examination with honesty. Something the money pop machine of Hollywood rarely achieves. My coveted 5Stars. Indulgent and waiting for the ugly turn (which occurs with the benefit of drugs), this movie didn't move me. I didn't like the characters (perhaps that was the point); I didn't feel empathy for them. Watching the movie was a bit like reading People magazine - I wanted to see the what they are up to but don't really care about those people. The A Party - Madeline
The movie has a great cast but the plot is not so good - some funny/sad scenes but on the whole we were disappointed. The movie is watchable but it is just not great. I wanted to give it 2 1/2 stars but
did not know how to do.... I am glad taht I watched it but will not be recommending it to anyone.
