In a time long past, when magic was fading from the world of men, the malevolent sorceress Mab (Miranda Richardson) summoned forth a mighty wizard to keep the power of the Old Ways alive. The wizard's name. . .was Merlin (Sam Neill). But when his heart is touched by the love of the beautiful Nimue ( Isabella Rossellini), Merlin turns away from Mab's dark enchantments. Allying himself with the young warrior who will rise to become the legendary King Arthur, Merlin pledges his mystic skills to Arthur's Visionary cause: Bringing peace and justice to the realm haunted by monsters and ravaged by war and setting the stage for the ultimate clash of Good versus Evil.

Make sure you have some time to watch - Rob01
This is a mini series presentation as such the "movie" takes 4 hours to watch. The qualitiy of the acting and the cinematograph are fine all the charcters do good jobs in the acting dept. I liked the movie but could not go as far to say I loved it. Good story and makes good fantasy I still can recomend it if you are into this kind of stuff.
RETypical storyline... with a somewhat inaffectual Merlin - C2007
This four-hour fantasy miniseries, elaborating on the Arthurian legend and filmed in England and Wales, offers a portrait of the wizard Merlin (Sam Neill), following his life as a youth (Daniel Brocklebank) to his later conflicts with the evil Queen Mab (Miranda Richardson) and his love for Nimue (Isabella Rossellini), who is kidnapped by Lord Vortigern (Rutger Hauer). Amid battles and displays of magic and mysticism (courtesy of London's Framestore and the Jim Henson Creature Shop), Merlin strides the English countryside encountering Excalibur, the unbreakable sword, and a Camelot cast of colorful characters including the morphing manservant Frik (Martin Short), Morgan le Fey (Helena Bonham Carter), King Arthur (Paul Curran), Lancelot (Jeremy Sheffield), and Guinevere (Lena Heady). I love this movie. It's so beautiful and well acted. Sam Neil and compony are really good, and all the effects are so fresh and different (mostly because of the boys and girls working for the Jim Henson company). It's a nice, long fantasy film that just popped out of nowhere one day and remains a favorite. This is the kind of quite, intelligent fantasy that they just don't make enough of. Its not the Merlin you may be used to, but a great new take on the material. You don't need to be familiar with the legends to really appreaciate this one. A must for all lover of fantasy and great, imaginitive movie making. Cheers.
