Based on set & costume design alone this over the top production is Lush, glamourised and lacking quality over substance.
Moulin Rouge is a bit of a mess. It still baffles me why this movie is so popular among the mainstream - it's kind of a naughty version of Glee, with very little stirring emotional content embedded inside - but at least Ewan McGregor is really hot. That's basically the reason why this movie appeals to me so much.
The idea of placing 20th-century hit songs in a 1899 setting is genius, and the casting of two great, attractive actors, as well as phenomenal singers, proved to be the recipe for the success at Award shows and Fans. Sadly my heart wasn't won over... a Diamond flooded in disaster. One of my favourite screen musicals. - estefan
A classic love story in many ways, director Baz Luhrmann fills the screen with incredible imagery and one fantastically choreographed musical number after another. Ewan McGregor and Nicole Kidman work exceptionally well together with their romance being completely believable and well-played, despite it being the usual Romeo & Juliet-type story. However, that's another key to Moulin Rouge's success. Well, it is a variation of the "star-crossed lover" plot-line, Luhrmann still manages to keep it interesting and absorbing and of course, McGregor and Kidman's chemistry helps. Of particular note is the editing which makes this two-hour film feel like only forty minutes. There's a lot to admire in Moulin Rouge, but the heart of it is really the touching romance and excellent renditions of jukebox hits, especially "Your Song" and the medley of love songs sung atop of an elephant.Ridiculously Fun! - Hiku
This is definatly a modern musical with all the hits of the last few centuries mixed in where ever they can be placed. Great remixes, actors and actresses we know and love but in full musical glory. Its like watching a stage performance because it pulls you right in and you just want to belt it out and sing along.
One thing that made me sad but was also impressive was the ending, in which death comes to town and it can't be stopped. I would have rather it to have a happy ending but it was haunting how the end credits came on with the monogram writing, just like you'd expect in a staged play.
Exquisit costumes, musical remixes, acting, choreography with plenty of memorable moments.
