Bollywood Hollywood
Bollywood meets Hollywood, East meets West. Before you can say 'Karmic Intervention', dashing young millionaire Rahul Seth (Rahul Khanna) loses his girlfriend Kimberly (Jessica Pare) in a freak accident and is forced to marry a nice 'Indian girl' to appease his mother and grandmother. Rahul enlists the services of Sue Singh (lisa Ray), a fiercely independent escort, who he believes is Hispanic but looks convincingly Indian. The charade begins, the emotional chaos ensues and soon enough, much to Rahul's shock, his 'business agreement' morphs into a tale of love and passion like no other.

This was a quirky spoof of bollywood movies. Not a disrespectful spoof, but referenced many old bollywood movies and paid homage to them in a playful way. The love story is cute, and the songs are not too long. You could watch with the whole family except there is a little bit of mature themes including a not quite naked stripper scene, and references to prostitution. Not too graphic, but it is there.Bollywood for Beginners - SPSullivan
Bollywood, for those unfamiliar with the term, is the name accorded the enormously popular Hindi-language film industry arising out of Bombay, India. "Bollywood/Hollywood" pokes gentle fun at Bollywood by filtering one of Hollywood's most famed melodramas of recent years -- "Pretty Woman" -- through the cliches of the Indian genre. So here we get all the typical Bollywood standards -- from peculiar musical numbers to reluctant romantic liaisons -- yet set right in the heart of Toronto, with the characters worming their way through a very familiar storyline. Mehta -- clearly having a lot of fun with this light-hearted offering -- is most keen to explore the struggle of her protagonists between their Indian heritage and North American culture. This is most clearly embodied in Sue/Sunita, whose very name treads the border between the two worlds, but many of the characters are similarly conflicted: even the elderly grandmother (Dina Pathak, in her final performance) is prone to (mis)quoting Shakespeare. "Bollywood/Hollywood" is not always successful; the humour is sometimes rather tepid, and the musical numbers, while engaging, never quite fire up the audience. But with solid performances from Ray and Pathak -- and a delightfully absurd cameo by Canadian actress Jessica Paré -- "Bollywood/Hollywood" offers plenty of laughs.Humour, the unexpected, entertaining...ZIP ME - OutWest
Bollywood/Hollywood is one of my favourite movies to date. It has everything I like in a movie: lots of different elements of surprise, nothing too formula driven, humorous, something new and well done-and if it is Canadian, even better.
Bollywood/Hollywood provides an interesting and fun look inside Indian culture in Canada and a bit of the conflict of East versus Western cultures. And of course you have to throw in a bit of Bollywood for good measure. (From a more educational standpoint checkout the extras on the disk).
If you found "My Big Fat Greek Wedding" entertaining, I think you will like this one. Previous knowledge of Indian culture not required but it does add to the enjoyment.
