Basil (Leto) is a sheltered young Englishman willing to risk his fortune and place in society for the friendship of a commoner (Slater) and the love of a strikingly beautiful...but darkly mysterious...woman (Forlani). His newfound happiness is shattered, however, with the devastating discovery that all he holds dear is a cruel deception! With a terrific cast giving truly memorable performances-you'll be riveted as the intrigue only deepens when Basil faces his family's darkest secrets while coming to terms with his past!

In all, I found this film to be mediocre. I had a good deal of trouble believing in Christian Slater as an Englishman, even a "common" man. Claire Forlani's Julia was strangely disconnected and Jared Leto's Basil was weak and ridiculously gullible. The plot was overly predictable.
Mostly though, the story didn't engage me enough to immerse me in the period, so I was acutely aware throughout that the film was a "period piece" as opposed to feeling I was watching a vignette from that time.Victorian soap opera anyone? - laertes
I quite enjoyed this adaptation of Wilkie Collins' Basil. The sets and costumes are very good. There are lots of twists and turns in the plot and we all know where its going, but that's okay. Mr Slater is particularly good.
If you're jonesing for a Masterpiece Theatre episode, this will do.
