Rare Birds
Fortune Can Make A Man Do Some Pretty Fowl Things.
In the tradition of "Saving Grace" and "Waking Ned Devine" comes the comedy about how far people will go to maintain their grip on life.
Dave Purcell (Hurt) just woke up on the wrong side of life. His marriage is dead and his restaurant just went belly up. Things look pretty bad for Dave until his eccentric neighbor comes to the rescue.
Alphonse, Dave's neighbor, hatches a mad-yet-ingenious scheme in the hopes of saving his buddy's sagging fortunes. After staging the sightings of an extremely rare bird in the neighborhood, birdwatchers and hungry patrons the world over, flock to the area. The hoax succeeds far beyond expectations and business booms. But little does anyone know, Alphonse is working on a few other secret plans which will soon have Dave's restaurant swimming in controversy. With the threat of exposure, the authorities on the trail, will feathers fly?

poignant and laugh out loud funny. Superb Newfoundland scenery and soundtrack, relaxed Canadian acting. I think we had seen this before on TV maybe, but it was great to watch without commercials.
A typical snowball of a tale not really unlike 'The Worst Week of my Life' in many ways.Quietly entertaining - Belle45
This movie is comedic, thought provoking and interesting. I enjoyed it thoroughly in spite of its slow pace. The storyline itself is a little convoluted but so much better than this type of comedy is typically handled.
It plays well to the Newfie attitudes and makes me want to run such an outpost of a restaurant.
Pictures and stories that linger with me.Underrated - Drudey
In this day and age of fast paced, over stylized movies, comes this tale of a chef and his close friend, who tries to save his buddies deserted restaurant, by inventing the sighting of a near extinct duck near the location to attract customers.
While this is going on, there is still time left to work on a recreational submarine, in a basement which is filled with cocaine and the most strange flat lamps.
Hurt is acting his guts out as the clumsy, near nerve wrecked chef who's lost in an absurd world. And there is romance too.
Well, it's a long time ago I didn't see a movie which reminded me of another one, and this alone is quite an accomplishment. A lovely little movie, quite serene and if you ask me highly underrated pearl of creative cinema.
