To me there were huge holes in the American version. Like why did the kid watch the movie? And why didn't his mother hide it from him knowing it could be dangerous? For that matter why was she so driven to figure out what happened in the first place? The Japanese version answers all of these. She did hide the movie, a ghost told the kid to watch it and her niece was a victim. Now it makes sense.
The back story of Sadako (the girl who crawls out of the TV) is also fleshed out a little more and is much more believable in the Japanese version. The American version looks a lot better and has better effects but I'll take the original any day.pretty good horror movie - Draco
This movie is definitely different from the American version. The scariness and suspense is better in some ways because it's not as obvious. You would start tensing up when you think something would happen as in an American movie and you would jump in a different spot because you just weren't expecting it.
Good movie.could not bring myself to only give it three stars - Moir
I thought after seeing this,'What a well made film, such a pleasure to have seen it.' and regretted having to give it three stars because I felt it deserved to be rated higher than other films I gave three stars to but felt it did not rate four. I found however that I had to give it four.
The acting was so excellent, the way the scenes fit together. I was bowled over with admiration.
Someone who saw it with me suggested it might be too disturbing for some to wish to see (not for explicit violence or anything of that sort but for a mood it created). I thought there were some brilliant insights into working human psychology in how this was done.
