Average movie does not belong in the same breath as first 2 - DisposableHero
Compared to the first two, this movie is such a disappointment. Ripley crash lands on a prison planet, with characters each as bland as the next. Same goes for the plot and script. It really is an underwhelming movie, especially considering the bar set by the previous two.Bad wrap - JamesOh
I always thought that Alien 3 has recieved the worst rap of almost any sequel. Being too young to get to have first seen the first two movies, Alien 3 was the first movie of the quadrilogy that I saw, when I was first beginning to appreciate cinema. I had no emotional connection to Newt or the canon up to that point.
I loved this movie - the tone and atmosphere was very well done - the whole movie reeked of lonely isolation, and the sense of there being a dangerous void of authority, with an alien running around to boot, made me anxious. The sound is fantastic as well - from the rotating fans, to the clanging of metal, to the echoing of voices - and adds to the experience.
Yes, this movie made some major errors, but I don't bemoan them. The script, while it could have used some definite tweaking, comes from a fantastic premise.Certainly the worst of the franchise... - Coconut_Willy
...but still, in this special edition version it is quite good. I have seen the theatrical version many times but this was the first time that I watched the extended version and it is much, much better. True, the storyline is the same in both versions and it's not a very good one but it seemed more coherent here with better development. The cast is good doing a fine acting job with an often quite coarse dialogue. What is relatively unpleasant with this movie is that most characters are not very interesting and in a lot of cases, quite disgusting. I find that it's difficult to like a movie if you dislike most of the characters in it and such was the case for me in this one. The sets and locations are also very bleak although quite well done, the soundtrack is sometimes good, sometimes odd and the camera work is OK. There are quite a few action scenes and the special effects, although relatively well done, are nowhere near what they were in the previous installment (Aliens). I would certainly recommend this to fans of the franchise, sci-fi fans will probably enjoy it too but if you're none of the above, stick to the first 2 entries.
