This would have been great if Vincent D'Onofrio had been replaced by an actor with more charisma and more intensity. Think Sean Penn. He just came across as an odd man, and you wondered when he would do something horrible to Renee. I have never heard of Bob Howard,or perhaps it would have meant more. At any rate, although Zellwiger was good, as usual, the direction was a bit lacking and the character of Howard was just not played as it could have been. It/he had no impact, it was hard to care about him. He MUST have had charisma and charm and honesty in order for the woman to have written the memoir about him so many years later, and I just think they did the man a disservice by not playing him right. Two Texas kids and their dreams - stevemuhlberger
The only reason I wanted to see this movie was because it concerned the famous fantasy writer Robert E. Howard. What a treat it turned out to be. The acting and the sense of place and the theme -- young people in the middle of nowhere trying to realize their dreams -- reminded my wife and I of those excellent Aussie films of the 70s such as My Brilliant Career. My respect for Renee Zellweger, too, has gone up several notches. Her character was amazingly portrayed.
