Persuasion
A young couple's stormy romance scandalizes English society in this acclaimed adaptation of Jane Austen's classic love story.
Amanda Root and Ciarin Hinds of the Royal Shakespeare Company are the star-crossed lovers, Anne and Wentworth, whose passion is thwarted by a scheming socialite. Eight years later, when Anne is considered an old maid and her once-rich family is on the verge of bankruptcy, Wentworth returns. Will their second chance at love be ruined by the social conventions that destroyed it once? Or will the heart be persuaded by rules of its own? Adding flirtatious fun to Austen's irresistible romance, Persuasion "takes your breathe away! A dazzling five-star feast. If you adored 'A Room With A View'...then you'll cherish Persuasion."

This movie was slow in the beginning and the dialogue was a bit choppy, but it definitely got better.
It follows the sweet story of Anne Elliott who has consistently looked over in favour of her older sister. Anne refused Captain Wentworth 8 years ago in favour of family. Fast forward 8 years - Captain Wentworth is back in Anne's life.
A dance of true love ensues as their story enfolds.Perfection - Crumit
There is no young high-spirited heroine in this story, but a woman in her late twenties who lost the bloom of youth after being persuaded to refuse a handsome young naval officer when she was nineteen. Like Elizabeth Bennet in Pride and Prejudice, Anne Eliot is the reasonable center in a world of comical and sometimes exhasperating characters, and as you watch her navigating her way various slights, insults, and disappointments, you cannot resist wanting her to have the second chance and happy ending she so deserves.
Amanda Root, with drooping hair and understated emotion, is excellent as Anne, but everyone in the cast seems perfectly suited to what they're doing, especially Sophie Thompson (Emma's sister) as Anne's sister Mary, Ciarin Hinds as the jilted Captain Wentworth, and the wonderful Corin Redgrave as Anne's posturing feckless father. The sets and costumes seem the most realistic of any Austen production.
Persuasion is not the most bubbly Austen story, and there's not witty repartee between the hero and heroine, who spend most of the movie trying to stay out of each other's way. In her last book, Austen trained her wit on a story that deals with how we handle disappointment and loss. To me, this movie is the most satisfying production of any Austen work. (Though it's hard to argue with 1995's Pride and Prejudice!)Persuasion - Moviefan4
Upon first viewing, I found the film to be quite unimpressive. It lacked the style and entertainment of other Austen film adaptations. However, a second viewing was successful in changing my first impression...so much so that I decided to watch it a third. Turns out to be quite a good period film with more depth to it than is likely appreciated at first glance. I recommend it to anyone who likes a good period film.
