Safe
"Best Film Of The Decade." -Village Voice
Julianne Moore (Nine Months, Short Cuts) gives an astonishing performance as Carol White, a suburban housewife whose affluent environment suddenly turns against her. Safe is a bold, darkly comic, completely original drama depicting Carol's descent into the horrors of modern day living. Written and directed by acclaimed filmmaker Todd Haynes (Poison, Superstar) Safe has been hailed as "seductive... Scarily confident, beautifully acted. It will seize any viewer who dares to surrender to its spell. Feel free to laugh or scream." -Richard Corliss, TIME MAGAZINE

Unlike something like Far From Heaven, this Todd Haynes film is a little less accessible.
It tells the story of Carol White (Julianne Moore) who suddenly (randomly) falls ill. Later we find out her sickness is due to her environment and the chemicals that she encounters on her daily life.
It's pretty slow, with long shots as well as long takes and overall uneventful. But, if you're patient and enjoy these kinds of films it's a pretty interesting experience. Otherwise, navigate away from this page and go zip another film !fascinating style, brilliant performance - surfer
I can only assume the divisive reaction to this excellent film has to do with preconceptions or at least misconceptions of what people are renting.
Safe is a fascinating film, stylistically and thematically, about the nature of illness, our society and our reactions to both. It plays a bit like a documentary with a message but director Todd Haynes lead actress Julianne Moore make it much more than that. It is somewhat slow and dry but wonderfully profound if people just sit back and take it in.
Highly recommended for anyone interested in the subject of environmental illness or the Susan Sontag book 'Illness as Metaphor' or for anyone else interested in alternative film narrative or brilliant screen acting. For Film Buffs Only - Poustman
If you are in the right mood, this film will prove to be subtly fascinating in a very, very slow-moving way. Wonderful acting and hyper-realistic writing, intriguing direction (the camera angles scream alienation and disempowerment) and a score that supports everything perfectly. However, it is unlike most Hollywood entertainment; this is much like a literary novel put on film. (Which it may be, I know nothing beyond what I saw onscreen.)
