Well this movie certainly is moving at times but also some disturbing scenes that not everyone wants to watch. I was a little turned off at times but it is what it is and Keitel plays the role very well. My wife would certainly be disgusted by it which is why I watched it alone. All in all a pretty good flick showing you a real bad cop and what they can really do.Harrowing - JasonTHX
The amazing Harvey Keitel is always a commanding presence. He brings grit and hardness to every character he plays - even tender ones (like his patrolman in Thelma & Louise.) In Bad Lieutenent he has never been more naked (literally and figuratively.)Keitel portrays "The Lieutenant" - We are not told his name partly because that would humanize him to the audience. A man so coked and boozed during his days that his basic concerns are where to score his next heroin fix and whether The Dodges will win. After losing what's left of his soul to drugs, booze, and gambling he takes it upon himself to aid a young nun who was beaten and raped. While confronting the harshness of her crime he finds himself in a world of spiritual dispair. This movie bears a striking remblence to the 70's masterpiece Taxi Driver and Bad Lieutenant feels like a cousin of that watershed movie. It's gut wrenching drama that will leave you in shock.Keitel is at his best ! - kap0n3
Harvey Keitel is at his best in Abel Ferrara's dark "Bad Lieutenant." A warning: this movie is not for everyone and many may be offended by it, but those who watch it are in for one of the most intense and powerful performances ever. Keitel really gets into the role of this crooked cop. From drugs to booze to standing around nude, the Lt. is a guy that will anger and disgust you. He doesn't care about anything including his family. He is gaining a massive debt from betting on baseball games. Things are falling apart. It gets worse. A nun is brutally raped by two thugs in the very church she is a part of (a gruesome sequence but very real) and she forgives them for what they did to her. The Lt. cannot understand this. As he takes advantage of two teenage girls (another rough scene to watch) and blows his car radio away with is gun (the best part of the whole film and most amusing), the nun forgiving these evildoers still haunts him. Eventually, after shooting up with one of his mistresses (Zoe Lund), he confronts the nun and then he finally falls apart and searches for redemption. This leads to a startling and tragic finale. This film is definitely worth all the hype it has gotten. Not easy viewing but it is utterly realistic and Keitel is brilliant in every scene (who would have thought Harvey would ever do full frontal). See it and like one of the other critics said regarding the "Bad Lieutenant": you will never forget this movie.
