Flirting
Breaking the rules was never this fun.
Two star-crossed misfits risk everything to be together in this sexy and amusing coming-of-age film. Starring Noah Taylor (Vanilla Sky), Thandiwe Newton (Mission: Impossible 2) and Academy Award® nominee Nicole Kidman (Moulin Rouge), Flirting is a "brilliant" (The Washington Post) story about first love that's (miles ahead of the average teen film" (Variety)!
With his slight stature, obstinate stutter and love for existentialism, Danny (Taylor) doesn't quite fit in at this rugby dominated boys' school. But then he falls for radiant, intellectual Thandiwe (Newton) - an African student ostracized by the icy clique leader (Kidman) of a nearby girls' school. Despite meddling classmates, imperious teachers, and a lake separating their schools, Danny and Thandiwe's romance blossoms... until a crisis threatens to take Thandiwe away forever.

great characters and honest story-telling - sooz
i doubt i have anything to add that the previous reviews didn't already mention. it is a gem of a movie. and a realistic coming of age story, with characters you actually like and that seem real. what they do and say feels true. prior to seeing Flirting, i had seen one other by the same director. called Lawn Dogs, it featured a young and memorable Sam Rockwell. i would say the same exactly of it. it feels real. honest. and i don't hesitate to recommend both to those who are looking for a movie that gives more importance to story and character then it does to special effects.True Coming of Age Movie - jillmo
With great wit, charm, understatement and honesty Flirting puts most other teen coming of age movies ot shame. I would happily recommend it to contemporary teens despite the fact it's more than 10 years old. The "loser" kids have never been so endearing, smart and clever. The inter-racial element and historical reference are asides without been preachy or slammed down your throat.teen romance is not all pom-poms and fluff - bartonfink
A quite mature and realistic approach to young love set in twin boarding schools in 1965 Australia. The draw of this film was the chance to see such an impressive cast early on in their careers all in one place. The surprise was to see just how well written this was and the level of acting already achieved, even in very minor characters. Recommended for anyone looking for simply good filmmaking.
