The Secret Lives Of Dentists
"A secret worth sharing!"-Leah Rozen, People Magazine
In the tradition of American Beauty, acclaimed director Alan Rudolph (Afterglow) has fashioned a profoundly moving portrait of the modern family, expertly blending drama, humor and suspense in what Rolling Stone magazine calls "a remarkable film".
Dr. Dave Hurst (Campbell Scott, Rodger Dodger) seems content with his wife Dana (Hope Davis, About Schmidt), his three daughters, and a thriving dental practice shared with his beloved spouse. But when Dave glimpses Dana in the arms of another man, he begins entertaining dangerous fantasies, both sexual and violent. Spurred on by a menacing alter ego (Denis Leary, The Thomas Crowne Affair), Dave is forced to confront his repressed anger and resentment or lose everything he holds dear.

The only thing even remotely interesting here was watching the technique of the "dentists". Otherwise, I really don't know why I went back to finish watching the movie after falling asleep during it on the first night. I guess I kept hoping there would be some substance behind all of the car-sickness, flu, and basin-spitting.Worse than pulling teeth - icicletoes
I rather watch my dog sleep for 2 hours than suffer through this movie. I understand the message of the novel therefore I understand what the film maker is trying to convey - the mundane everyday lives of existence and how we can be confined to it. BUT
It doesn't have to be told this way. The music/score of the film is cliché. The style of the story telling is also very cliché. Those dream sequences are choppy and most of the time unnecessary. Over complicating and already complicated situation with too many "cool/art house" film techniques. I don't understand why people liked this film. The acting was fine but the storytelling was unfortunate.Looking for meaning - Rural_Ontario
You can watch this as sort of a painfully ordinary slice of a family's life, or you can look at the whole package this couple has bought into and found wanting. Two dentists – money is no object. Two big expensive homes with all the amenities – comfort in spades. Three daughters – they've built their own little world. She's swept away from her humdrum dental career by her amateur opera aspirations and maybe a fling with her musical director. Real married life just doesn't have the zing of high drama. He thinks it's all about two things: security and sex. And he can't understand what she wants besides him pawing her. Welcome to middle age.
