Demonlover
"A diabolical techno thriller."-Stephen Holden, The New York Times
Olivier Assayas' Demonlover takes us deep into the underbelly of the illicit and financially lucrative world of 3D animated pornography. With billions at risk, Diane (Connie Nielsen) is hired into a high stakes game of espionage, which leads her to the twisted world of the Hellfire Club, an interactive torture website. Her bid to gain fortune quickly becomes a frantic race to survive as she is challenged by her amoral colleague (Charles Berling), an antagonistic and mysterious assistant (Chloe Sevigny) and an outspoken, pot-smoking American executive (Gina Gershon).

A great example in the art of movies that play in the 11pm - 2am time slots on television as those watching drift off to sleep. Nothing entirely exciting, nothing groundbreaking, and nothing you'll be likely to remember a month after watching. Scenes are in French, Japanese, and English, everyone has some nice clothes, the soundtrack is slick and crisp, the majority of the film is shot with a cooling filter, and when all the shine and gloss is removed you're left with a highly uninspired drama with enough hackneyed sex thrown in to try and keep you interested. This movie isn't smart, it's shiny.
Great if you're bored, or looking to get bored.Great beginning, terrible end - anglosphere
I'm so profoundly disappointed with this movie because it had such a promising beginning. But like some movies of this genre, the writer/director needed to spice up the plot and in the process lost the audience. You get lost quickly as nothing is explained to you but you still hope that the director will return to his senses and fill you in, but he never does. If you insist on watching this movie, which is about corporate espiognage, stop it in the middle and walk away, that's what I should have done.Smart and Strange - Nik-
With a title like "demonlover", I was expecting a stupid, exploitative movie with lots of pointless sex and violence. Instead, I got a brainy foreign film about corporate intrigue and the business dealings of the porn world. The emphasis is on the intrigue -- not the porn.
Paranoia, double agents, business contracts, drugged drinks, conspiracy, break ins, maintaining a mask so you can get what you want, snubbing subordinates and kissing up to superiors -- the atmosphere is the real star of the film.
An interesting but forgettable flick -- a little too vague in some ways. I'm glad I saw the movie, but I could have continued along merrily in life without ever having seen it.
