Heavenly Creatures
From the director of the Lord of the Rings comes a chilling true-life drama about an obsessive friendship that led to murder. In 1950s New Zealand, introvert Pauline (Melanie Lynskey) befriends self-confident Juliet (Kate Winslet, in her film debut); soon, the two are inseparable, retreating to an imaginary world. Their relationship intensifies in the face of opposition from their families ... opposition that ultimately has bloody consequences.

A Derectorial Masterpiece about Obsession - jmunds
Wow what a terrifying film. From its opening blood curdling screams to the ending watch is both cleansing and unsettling.
This is not some mere documentarian story, nor is it a mere story of friendship, it is a journey into the dark and overwhelming world of obsession. The two leads are both stagey and human, as is all the all the acting. Being both other worldly and very human at the same time. But the real sight in this film is the filmmaking it self. Peter Jackson takes the the most odd shots every time, and they all serve a purpose to illustrate the viscous and overwhelming nature of the events. A must see for both crime drama fans, kate winslet fans, Jackson fans and generally anyone who wants a new experience in film.Great Movie, Lousy Blu-Ray - kevo64
The 4 star review is for the movie itself, an incredible movie, with great performances and direction. This is the movie that really got Peter Jackson noticed, it is based on a true story and totally riveting. It is about the intense relationship between two young girls, both more or less loners, and the borderline mentally ill fantasy world they concoct for themselves. Their parents are worried that they are lesbians so they try and separate them which leads to tragic results. Lord of The Rings and King Kong may be a lot bigger, but this is easily Peter Jacksons best movie. The Blu-Ray transfer from Alliance is a total disgrace, once again Alliance has released a Canada only Blu-Ray that is garbage. The aspect ratio is wrong, 1.85:1 instead of the 2.35:1 original, and a horrendous 2 channel audio that isn't lossless with not even a single extra. Alliance has done this time and again in Canada with movies they have the rights for, Se7en, Blade, Faculty, unfortunately the list is way to long to continue. This movie deserves so much better! So a 4 out of 5 for the movie, a 1 out of 5 for the Blu-Ray transfer, hopefully whoever has the rights in the States will make a proper Blu-Ray of this great film.Peter Jackson's Lesbian Fairy Tale - FilmJunkie
Peter Jackson's beautiful movie about a true story of two young lesbians who decide to plot a murder so that they may continue their romance.
The girls (Melanie Lynskey and Kate Winslet) live in a fantasy world that Jackson constructs out of people that seem like puppets and dolls, mud people who appreciate that these two can and do love each other.
The movie is tragic and lovely, and the final scene is unforgettable. Just when you think you know where it is going, it turns on you and shocks you with what these girls are willing to do.
Though Lynskey is the star, you can see why Kate Winslet has shone so brightly, only a teenager here the camera loves her and her passion reads clearly on the screen.
