A coming of age film that's hugely internal. Frankie (Lauren Ambrose) articulates her feelings only through the tiniest of looks and facial expressions. The drama is in her changing relationships. Frankie and her brother own the restaurant and a house together. Although brother Neil has invested in a bar (which is in the process of tanking.) Her best friend Nicola owns the piercing salon next door to her restaurant. She's accustomed to hogging the all the attention and drama with Frankie in a supporting role. The major attractions of Myrtle Beach are the sun and the surf and the night life. Although the beach is just a minute or so from their house---Frankie's not a swimmer. She has a tendency to freckle and burn in the sun, so her none of her free time is spent lying on the beach giving George Hamilton a serious run for his money.
This tourist season will bring two new people into her life: Josee. She's a blonder, leggier version of Nicola. She's a bit of a bounder with an intimate knowledge of chaos theory. But instead of the beating butterfly wings on the other side of the earth, there are more practical and immediate applications to be gained by batting her eyes in the here and now, such as free airplane tickets, free room and board, etc. Josee with her finely attuned romance radar, has to point out to Frankie; Heath--the newly arrived entrepreneur who sells tie dyed shirt's from his van is much more interested in Frankie than her cuisine.A good film - Wentai
The acting was excellent. Don't be fooled by bad reviews -- just bear in mind this is not a high budget action flick. It is a character film, an indie where the main point is the lives of the young women who are growing up and facing the same crises and angst as the rest of the world.
Young Frankie is caught between her tough and trashy blond best friend (also female), her tall, gorgeous but manipulative new friend (also female) and a kind but air-headed boyfriend who lives in his van.
If you like coming of age movies, and you like character studies and strong supporting female cast members, then rent this movie.Swimming Floats (but just!) - Drudey
This movie has a good deal of truth to it, where living/growing up in a 'tourist' town is the subject. The characters are believable, Frankie's (Lauren Ambrose)confusion over her sexual identity is very believable. The story is good right up to the end, when it just kind of...
...ends. The ending wraps most things up, it just doesn't do it in a very satisfying way.
