This film has a simple and basic premise – the townsfolk want to obtain a doctor and keep him in their remote village. Unfortunately this tale just drags on for much too long and becomes very predictable after 30 minutes and after an hour it just gets boring. There is simply not enough in this story to keep one engaged.
The jokes are few and far between and become mundane. The theme of the remoteness of the village becomes strained and repetitive. The characters run their course in the first half and nothing much is developed in story or characters after. There is a fading in the last half and sleepiness ensues.Funny and poignant - loneshieling
This is a French-Canadian version of Waking Ned Devine: a small town banding together in a conspiracy to mislead someone (to their advantage). But more than that, it's a picture of reality in small, isolated towns that depend on a failing natural resource for jobs. They need new work, but convincing a company to set up shop in, let's face it, the middle of nowhere is a difficult proposition. The basis for the plot is that a company may build a plant there, but the town has to have a fulltime doctor for the company to even consider it.
This is a truly funny movie, that captures the some of the desperation and ingenuity of people at the end of their economic rope.
