Secrets & Lies
Mike Leigh's superlative drama, at once hysterically funny and profoundly sad, examines a wounded contemporary British family. Hortense (Marianne Jean-Baptiste), a young black optometrist, has just buried her beloved adoptive mother. In her sorrow, she embarks on a search for her birth mother, who turns out to be Cynthia (Brenda Blethyn), a white factory worker living a lonely life with her surly daughter Roxanne (Claire Rushbrook). No one in the family, except Cynthia's brother Maurice (Timothy Spall) and his wife Monica (Phyllis Logan), knows that the teenage Cynthia gave up a child for adoption without ever seeing the baby. Hortense contacts Cynthia, and after a heart-wrenching reconciliation, they become best friends. Maurice and Monica, childless but financially secure, are very fond of Roxanne and host a family barbeque to celebrate her twenty-first birthday. Cynthia convinces Hortense to attend the party and meet the family--as a mate from the factory--but during the cake and champagne celebration, the family's secrets and lies emerge in a cathartic, emotional sweep. Leigh’s trademark for developing his films’ characters and storylines from an intense series of improvisations with the actors themselves reaches its summit with Hortense and Cynthia’s reunion in a coffee shop, resulting in another deeply moving portrait of a family at a personal crossroads.

Mike Leigh draws us into the conflicted lives of characters who are challenged in facing their secrets and lies. Timothy Spall's "everyman" character is heroic in his patience and understanding. His honesty about his feelings and his recognition of the importance of family keeps the rest of the characters from flying out of orbit.
Some scenes did stretch out a bit but I found that served to create dramatic tension in the anticipation of what was going to happen next.
At first I found the lack of visual resemblance between Brenda Bleythen and Marriane Jean-Baptiste distracting but they were completetly captivating in their roles and told a beautiful story of redemption.
I am looking forward to checking out other Michael Leigh films.WOW! You will be left SPEECHLESS! - Sushi
If you like your dramatic movies to be DRAMATIC, with lots of crying, yelling, depression, alcoholism, chain-cigarette-smoking, then this is the movie for you! Full of festering secrets and cathartic revelations, Secrets and Lies is full of flawed, damaged, yet enormously endearing characters that, despite their terrible situations, find love, hope and belonging with one another.
Despite what some other Zip reviewers have commented, Secrets & Lies is indeed humourous - although it's a very black humour. If your family is composed of rather messed up individuals, yet manage to stay close through it all - you will connect to this movie.Top-notch drama - theScud
A superlative British drama about a dysfunctional family, ranking right alongside "All or Nothing" (also directed by Mike Leigh and starring Timothy Spall) and "Nil by Mouth", though "Secrets & Lies" does not have the violence element of the latter picture.
I was astounded to read that this film was not scripted in the usual sense. The dialogue is very good, as is the acting, especially from Spall and Blethyn.
Even at 125 mins, the pacing of the movie is excellent and there is not a wasted shot.
This is an emotional and heart-felt film that you should not miss.
