and a brilliant director, this documentary is part biography, part homage to the reclusive artist, who left us with only a handful of films, but what films! A Clockwork Orange, 2001: A Space Odyssey, The Shining, Full Metal Jacket ....
This film was made by Kubrick's brother in law, so you're not likely to get a more complete look at his life story. This includes footage from Kubrick's childhood, personal family home movies, as well as a great number of interviews, including his wife and some of his daughters, as well as many celebrities (Tom Cruise, who also narrates, Steven Spielburg, Sydney Pollack, Martin Scorsese, Jack Nicholson, Shelly Duvall, Malcolm McDowell...)
That this was originally meant to be a three part TV special explains the 2 hour, 22 minute run time, but it means this documentary looks at literally every single film Kubrick made.
The only thing missing, I suppose, is the darker side of Kubrick. The film acknowledges Kubrick's reputation as difficult, reclusive, perfectionist, eccentric...but it kind of glosses over this, not completely denying it, and not completely agreeing with it, making it hard to determine if he was misunderstood, or if this film is hiding his darker personality traits (the pros and cons of having his brother in law make the film).
Those people that do speak of difficulties with Kubrick are always quick to point out that it was worth it, they'd do it again, he was still an awesome guy, etc etc.
When you see the workmanship, the incredible attention to detail, the use of lighting that can only be described as artistic, the blood sweat and tears that went into each and every Kubrick film...well, you'll never look at one the same again, and you'll find beauty even in his "failures", like Eyes Wide Shut.
