Wild at Heart
David Lynch delivers a "stunning piece of work" (Chicago Tribune) with this "flamboyantly violent and erotic" (The Village Voice) tale of love on the run. Winner of the prestigious Palme d'Or at the Cannes International Film Festival, Wild At Heart is a twisted "rollercoaster ride to redemption through an American gothic heart of darkness" (Variety). If Lula (Laura Dern) knows one thing in this world, it's that she's destined to be with her ex-con boyfriend Sailor (Nicolas Cage) - no matter how many times her mama (Diane Ladd) tries to kill him. But when she and Sailor finally hit the road in a desperate bid to find happiness, their journey plunges them into a disturbing underworld filled with sexual secrets and dangerous desires that form a terrifying "tapestry of human extremity" (Variety).

Arts & Entertainment and David Lynch - Rocky_Al
To the extent that cinematographic art is both Art and Entertainment, the rating system has always presented a frustration in trying to combine both aspects in one rating, zero to five, or ten, as I prefer.
Lynch makes good cinematography, his actors and their characterisations have been winning prizes at festivals and very high ratings from ZIP members and very some low ones; not a three star in sight at this time. But his preoccupation with the trashy losers in "les bas fonds" of society does not necessarily make for entertainment to this viewer. The sentimental "happy" ending did it for me. It would be perfectly suited for undergraduate social science classes. My low rating is meant as a warning to unsuspecting viewers.
In my old film society days we used to graph member responses (in percentage numbered ratings) to our selections. When a film collected both very favourable and very negative ratings, we considered it to be a "good film society film".
May-be David Lynch' work occupies that position. And may-be I have grown less tolerant of cheap scripts. This movie is insane. - shale
This movie is insane. This movie is also very, very fun. I am a big fan of Lynch, and he is many things: intense, creepy, challenging, but rarely is he this much fun.
Watching this movie now, in 2009, makes me wish Nicolas Cage was still willing to make such out there movies, and was still able to give such wonderful performances. The cast through and through is amazing.
Wild at Heart is a must see.The Wizard of Oz on Acid. - cathyottawa
Surrealist indeed!
Nic Cage and Laura Dern are at the center of this white trash, heavy metal love story. The highway is their yellow brick road - and they meet alot of strange characters along the way.
Diane Ladd is the wicked witch, who will stop at nothing to keep these two apart.
This is a weird, somewhat campy, sexy, violent, trippy movie - sort of Quintin Tarantino meets Paul Verhoeven (basic instinct, showgirls).
I loved how Nic Cage's character was an Elvis fanatic - and he does his own singing in the movie.
If you're already a Lynch fan, you'll dig it. If this is your first Lynch movie, you'll be able to tell pretty early on if this is your cup of tea or not. I think it's one of his best.
