A lot of movies are shot in Toronto to act as if it's in the states, it was good to see Toronto used as the real background of the movie. Places I used to pass by 20 times a week look different with the great camera angla Deepa Metha used and the pictures are beautiful.
Other than that the meeting scene is nice and you can actually feel the lightenning love that strike them but then nothing..... to badClunky... - Beeee
I loved the novel, and agree with previous reviewers that it would be hard to bring Carol Shield's nuanced writing to the screen intact. I wasn't expecting a great deal, but was still disappointed. The direction was stilted (long lingering shots of actors meant, I suppose, to convey great poignance, but coming off as static and amateurish) and some of the acting was pretty wobbly. I'm also not sure that the decision to use so much South Asian-inspired music in the soundtrack was a wise one, given the setting and characters. My biggest complaint, however, was the relocation of the action from Winnipeg to Toronto. The story lost a lot of its character as a result. Feel free to skip this one, even if you loved the book.Love in the time of republicanism - Joe2
Bruce Greenwood is always watchable - he has a Bryan Adams thing going on - and all the other costars are great, too. Nicely filmed, etc. But it's hard to translate a literary novel to the screen: movies are too visual to really express the subtle nuance that a writer like Carol Shields employs so well. The book is an incisive look into the nature of the relationship; the movie is a sappy love story.
