Black Robe
In the winter of 1634, an extraordinary man began a perilous journey into the North American wilderness...
In the rugged 17th century Canadian wilderness, Father Laforgue, a young, idealistic Jesuit priest, is assigned to go up river into the wilderness on a perilous journey to convert the Huron Indians. His Algonquin Indian guides nickname him "Black Robe." His young aide and translator, Daniel, falls in love with Annuka, the beautiful daughter of the Algonquin chief.
Torn between his own desires and ideals of the priesthood, Laforgue's faith is tested as the expedition faces the elements. Attacked, captured and brutalized by hostile Indians, the traumatic experience challenges everything the young priest believes. Together with his young companions, he escapes to complete his mission and comes to understand the true spirit of the land and the spirit he sought to convert.

Interesting, slow in places - popcorny
As other reviewers have stated, the movie is historically accurate. The historical accuracy and scenery kept the film interesting. If you are looking for an adventure film though this is not it. We were able to get up to grab snacks, the phone etc. without pausing the movie, and missing significant parts.
In all the story was predictable and slow at times. If you are interested in history it is a good movie. For others I suggest trying something else.Well done! - Chucky
Let me begin by telling all of you nay sayers that I am a history buff. This movie has non stop panoramic beauty, it introduces the viewer to several Native Quebec tribes and the raw way in which they lived. The inter cultural relations coupled with the oppressive Jesuit dogma and the central characters unshakable faith render a fast moving dynamic which exposes all facets of early life here that still shows to this day. It is all presented within a panorama of breathtakingly beautiful land and lake scape's. Indeed it is no Dances with wolves and thank Hollywood for that. This was a historical drama that was well presented and superbly produced, it sports a thick, real plot and is indeed the closest that we'll ever get to actually hearing the dead speak.Great Depiction of early Canada - 6tttchik
The scenes in this film are so raw and shows the cold so vividly that it creeps into your limbs so much so that you would wonder how the heck Canada ever became populated. Its an insightful portrait of how different cultures don't understand one another and how colonization of Canada was just simply brutal.
