Twists Took Me By Surprise - c4th
The twists in this movie took me by such surprise that I questioned the validity of some of them. My pride got the best of me and I reviewed the tape intent on revealing gaping plot holes and obvious misrepresentations. What I found instead however was how the director cleverly allowed us to stumble down a wrong trail of assumptions. The movie is full of moments where the thoughts and actions of characters are easily misinterpreted but stand up against the test of reviewing. We mislead ourselves because we believe what we want to believe.
Meg Tilly nails the role of shy, naive, Olivia still grieving the death of her mother. She has inherited millions. Her yearn for romance makes her prime prey for fortune seekers. Tilly manages to portray vulnerability without gullibility; intelligence with naivety. Rob Lowe, Doug Savant, and John Glover are convincing in their key roles as are Dana Delaney and Kim Cattrall in smaller roles.
Masquerade is actually the name of Olivia’s boat, the source of many fond memories of her dad. The title obviously refers to some of the characters as well. Most are not what they seem initially. Some thought good turn out bad and some thought bad turn out banal but one in particular is kept in question till the very end (and I mean the very end).
This movie contains all the elements of a great thriller – murder, suspense, action, surprising twists, brief nudity.
