We watched this movie every year on Good Friday. This is an incredibly inspired, grace-filled film.
To those who accused the makers of this film of targeting Jewish people, I will only say that it was not the Jewish people who killed Jesus, but the Sanhedrin and the temple high priests, who were afraid of and angry at Jesus, especially after his cleansing of the temple a few days earlier.
It is entirely appropriate that Mel Gibson, whose private life has not been spotless, to make this film. We are all sinners, and WE crucify Christ every time that we sin.Very graphic - saint_angrrr
I am not a religious person, but I do know a lot about biblical stories and historical events.
I really only went to see this movie to find out what all the controversy was about. It didn't make sense to me that one of the oldest stories around could stir up so much bickering all over again.
Mel Gibson directed, produced and created this movie (I won't say he wrote it because technically it comes from the bible) He did not skimp out on anything. The beatings are intensely realistic, graphic and violent... to the point of you wanting to get up and stop them from doing it.
Basically summed up... this movie is approximately 2 hours of Jesus (James Caviezel) getting the crap kicked out of him by the Romans. I dont want to spoil the ending, but Jesus dies (hyuck hyuck)
What impressed me most was that all of the movie was spoken in the languages of the middle east at the time (Latin/Italian, Aramaic, Hebrew etc) and the actors spoke it flawlessly. This was a very admirable feat in my opinion.
I think the movie achieved what I assume Mel Gibson was trying to portray... he wanted to show the suffering of Jesus and give people the feeling of actually being there to witness it. Voilà que Gibson cherche à offrir une vision plus radicale du chemin de croix de Jésus. Un fils de Dieu acceptant la souffrance en rémission des péchés, sanguignolant, fouetté, torturé et battu sachant déjà le sort qui lui était réservé. Faisant partie d'une Église catholique ultraconservatrice, Gibson voulait représenter le corps et le sang du Christ donnés en rémission des péchés, faire comprendre toute la souffrance de Jésus venu sur Terre. Probablement qu'il trouvait que l'essentiel du message est que, non seulement est-il ressuscité, mais qu'il a souffert pour l'être humain, tel était sa destinée.
Il faut d'abord dire que la performance des acteurs est impeccable. Toute en subtilités, car il ne faut pas oublier que le film est en araméen et en latin, il fallait de vrais regards pour transposer des images aussi fortes. Maia Morgenstern en Marie est pleine de sensibilité, d'acceptation et de résignation. Elle vit avec peine, mais force le sort réservé à son fils. Ce regard rempli d'amour maternel est d'un telle puissance! Monica Bellucci en Marie-Madeleine, support à Marie, est d'une grande beauté et l'on sent cet amour qu'elle porte à Jésus.
Évidemment, c'est la performance de Caviezel qui est à souligner. Les yeux bruns remplis d'horreur, de souffrance, de fatigue, mais également de compassion, de pardon et d'amour est parfois à faire frémir. Par un seul regard, il nous fait comprendre toute cette humilité présente dans le fils de Dieu.
Il faut également tracer un parallèle entre ce film et La dernière tentation du Christ qui nous fait comprendre que Jésus pouvait refuser toute cette souffrance et c'est ce qu'attend Satan tout au long de la Passion de Gibson.
Gibson tente une vision différente des 12 dernières heures de la vie de Jésus, s'en tenant à la torture subie. Il ne réinvente pas, mais traite différemment. En somme, un bon film à voir pour les interprétations et pour comprendre combien il faut souffrir pour racheter les faute
