Hideous Kinky
"Vibrant and Adventurous! A splendid role for Kate Winslet." - Janet Maslin, The New York Times
Two-time Academy Award - nominee Kate Winslet (Best Actress, Titanic; Best Supporting Actress, Sense and Sensibility, 1995) stars as a young mother searching for adventure, passion and enlightenment in early 1970s Morocco.
With her two precocious daughters in tow, free-spirited Julia (Winslet) flees her stifling life in London for the promise of excitement, freedom and self-discovery in exotic Marrakech. In her single-minded quest for enlightenment and escapism, Julia falls into a steamy relationship with a handsome street performer (Said Taghmaoui). But her selfish determination may actually cause her to lose what she loves most. Incidentally, the title Hideous Kinky, is derived from a free-association word game enjoyed by the two young girls.

Kate Winslet loved the book on which this was based. So much so that, hot off her Titanic success, she turned down the Oscar bait role of Viola in Shakespeare in Love to take this part.
This is a hard film to describe. It's one part adventure story, one part family drama, and one part "finding yourself" film.
Julia (WInslet) is on a quest for spiritual enlightenment, so she leaves everything behind, and goes on a journey to Morrocco. The only catch is, she has two young daughters that she brings along for the ride. But it's 1972 - the tail end of the hippie era, so this wasn't so outrageous.
The actresses that play her daughters Bea and Lucy - they are outstanding. They elevate this film to something really special. They have such a natural, unforced chemistry, both with each other and with Winslet.
Bea, the older daughter, is intelligent and practical; sometimes more the adult of the three. She wants to go to school. She wants to be "normal".
Lucy, the younger, is creative and whimsical, and full of life. Just a joy.
Not alot happens in this film. It's just the adventures in Morrocco of these three, as they try to get by with little to no money. But these characters are all so likeable, I enjoyed every minute of their journey, and was glad I could come along for the ride.
