The Statement
At The End Of World War II, Many Of Those Involved In War Crimes Were Prosecuted. Some Got Away. Until Now.
Veteran actor and two-time Oscar winner Michael Caine stars with Tilda Swinton and Jeremy Northam in The Statement, a shocking and provoking thriller that delves into a fascinating chapter in moderns!
An ambitious Judge (Swinton) and an exacting Colonel (Northam) re-open the sixty-year-old case of Pierre Brossard (Caine), an escaped Nazi collaborator accused of murdering seven Jews. Now an old man living a sheltered life within the Catholic Church, Brossard is also being trailed by mysterious hit men, determined to kill him before he's arrested. When the Church shuts out Brossard to protect their dirty secret, it's a race against time, the government, and the hit men to discovery whether justice will prevail? Or revenge will be served!

Three Stars for Michale Caine, but enough Catholic bashing. - crazyboutmovies
The three stars are for Michael Caine, who never dissapoints in whatever role he plays.
Again, I must point out the absurdity of this idea that there is a vast conspiracy within the Catholic church to hide and assist ONE lone former Nazi collaborator.
Of course there were Catholic clergies and lay persons during and after World War II who supported the Nazis or were anti-semitic, but to say that the entire Church is involved in helping former Nazis is simply illogical and insulting.
The Catholic Church, under Pope Pius XII, another figure subjected to the abuse of revisionists historians, did more than any other religious organizations to save Jews from the Nazis. This is a FACT that has been proven by facts and figures, as well as personal testimonials from Jews who survived the war.
It is about time someone makes a movie about the true role of the Catholic Church in World War II.WWII Thriller - gertie
Norman Jewison never disappoints & this kept us on the edge of our seats. The cast were top notch & these stories coming out of the archives after the 50 year anniversary of the end of the war are disturbing but riveting to hear. The story includes the judge & the colonel, both of whom are too young to know of the stories & crimes that went on during the war & this made the history books come to life for us older folks as well as the current generations. It's a wonder that the RC church is still in business with all the history of it's gpoings on that are coming to light & this is no exception. Highly recommendedThe Statement - Eklektik67
I hadn't heard of this film till it was recommended by my sister and glad I rented it! Great cast, especially Tilda Swinton and Michael Caine and few old Canadian legends like William Hutt, etc. The collaboration of the Catholic church and the Vichy government is well known, but worth telling again and especially since the conservative elements of the church are still in power and in government. The French have a long and sordid history of anti-semitism and it is rising again - so I guess we don't learn from history. Well worth seeing for anyone who doesn't know this history and even folks like me who do.
