La Dolce Vita
In Federico Fellini's seminal film LA DOLCE VITA, a three-hour masterpiece that shows one man's descent into "the sweet life" of debauchery, Marcello Mastroianni stars as eccentric journalist Marcello Rubini. On assignment to chronicle the lives of the rich and famous Italian aristocracy in a gossip column for a Roman newspaper, Marcello floats from one fabulous party to the next, meeting all varieties of beautiful, extravagant people. While he would never protest this seemingly ideal job, it makes him feel lonely and empty, and he stays up drinking and dancing night after night only to wake up each morning unbalanced and unfocused. The film follows Marcello's ups and downs in an episodic pattern in which each evening is a new story, a new adventure, a new dare, a new woman with whom to fall helplessly in love--but only for that night. Each morning the slate is wiped clean, and Fellini resets Marcello's score to zero.

" Citizen Kane " was a tour-de-force and is often
considered the " Greatest Movie of All Time "- I'd
put " La Dolce Vita " right up there. It's the film
that made Marcello a star, with his -what would become typical- diffidence, world-weariness, ennui.
The fleshy Anita Ekberg was almost other-worldly,
and as another reviewer remarked, she certainly gives her all to the part. ( I don't recall ever
seeing her in anything else ) The opening sequence is literally breath-taking, as are Fellini's amazing
cuts, wild and beautiful. You can't get Nino Rota's
music out of your head. You must see this movie- it is film-making at its best. I couldn't sit through the entire thing again to listen to Richard Schickel's commentary but did watch some and it was interesting and informative: if you're
a buff, you'd very much enjoy it.A beautiful, powerful, enchanting film - Elshaneo23
Great films don't just evoke emotion, they examine and challenge the hows and whys of emotion. La Dolce Vita explores sensuality, love and need - the need for fame, for wealth, for meaning and purpose, for spiritual enlightenment and the need to be wanted. And Fellini does all this by focusing on the shallowest people - celebrities, paparazzi and the wealthy. It's a beautiful, powerful, enchanting film and quite possibly my new favourite Fellini.Stellar - QueerNorth63
A classic best paired as a double-feature with The Sweet Smell of Success (made five years earlier). Less dark and brooding than Sweet Smell of Success, La Dolce Vita nevertheless is an intense examination of celebrity culture in the sixties, which as another reviewer commented, is not that dated viewed today. Mastroianni is in top form, and Anita Ekberg is absolutely electric on screen. I loved Fellini's very deft hand at the series of interconnected scenes which make you feel like you're on one all-night-long voyeur trip. Mesmerizing.
