Elizabeth von Arnim's novel tells the story of four dissimilar women in 1920s England who leave their damp and rainy environs to go on a holiday to a secluded coastal castle in Italy. Mrs Arbuthnot and Mrs Wilkins, who belong to the same ladies' club but have never spoken, become acquainted after reading a newspaper advertisement for a 'small mediaeval Italian castle on the shores of the Mediterranean to be let furnished for the month of April'. They find some common ground in that both are struggling to make the best of unhappy marriages. Having decided to seek other ladies to help share expenses, they reluctantly take on the waspish, elderly Mrs Fisher and the stunning, but aloof, Lady Caroline Dester. The four women come together at the castle and find rejuvenation in the tranquil beauty of their surroundings, rediscovering hope and love.Sweet - BarbinBC
Starts out promisingly, but fades a bit midway...character development not fully tracked...one moment all is inner turmoil, then a shot of lovely scenery, heroine drowsing in sun, and ta-da! - instant transformation.
A few very funny moments, fabulous costumes & setting...a gentle, very sweet and mild story. Could have done without the very obvious walking stick transformation at the end...I think we got it, Mr. Director - no need to underline it...
All in all, a pleasant diversion if there is nothing else going on and you need a feel-good boost, but possibly most appreciated by lovers of the orginal novel? Which I am now going to read...because it has a fairly distinguished reputation and I would like to see if the novel has a bit more depth than the movie managed! How to deal with life's problems! - caladonia
An excellent film from the BBC which is long overdue for DVD release. Joan Plowright is a standout in this role as the matriarch among four women who seek a respite from their drab lives in London by renting a castle in Italy. Each of the four, the husbands of two of them and Mr Briggs, the owner of the castle, learn a great deal about themselves and life in general. A welcome addition to the Zip library.
