Air America
The Few. The Proud. The Totally Insane.
Mel Gibson and Robert Downey, Jr. are two renegade pilots ensnared in the madness of covert operations over Loas during the Vietnam conflict. They lead a crew of Air America, a not-so-secret airline that drops everything from live pigs to opium over villages throughout the Vietnam countryside. Join Mel, Robert and the crazy crew of wartime flyers in the funniest action-comedy since Lethal Weapon 2 and Good Morning Vietnam.

Air America - TheWiz
Another Boomer's movie with a very light feel to it. Made in the shadow of "Good Morning Vietnam" and "Platoon", minus the violence & language (for the most part) but unfortunately, minus any message and great performance. So what we are left with? Well, this is a great mindless movie where we get to see the development of movie greats Downey Jr and Gibson. Both actors are young with plenty of energy and you can feel their energy even through this copy-cat script, poor directing and every other negative I can think of.Quite Bad - HelexraAscianti
Contrived, predictable, over-acted and not funny. Mel (I'm the predictable 'mentor' to the newcomer) Gibson and Robert (I'm the overacting new guy!) Downey Jr. star in a movie about the very-real Air America, civilian pilots who during the Vietnam war flew highly dangerous assignments to assist the us war effort, exposing them to death on every flight.
It tries too hard copy MASH, and unlike MASH it isn't a black-comedy, it's a straight-up comedy. Problem is, it isn't especially well written, and the acting is *way* over done. It whacks at you with a sledgehammer when all it needs is a feather. The gags are obvious and frankly, been done before.
There are some clever bits in it (such as the one just prior to the 'great moral decision') which one of the lead characters will inevitably have to make right at the end, but you can tell how it's going to end 20 minutes before it ends. Which is a great disappointment.
Mostly I'm giving this 2 stars because I didn't laugh, or even chuckle.two thumbs up - FieroGT
Mel Gibson and Robert Downey were outstanding here. You can see they are not just going through the paces here they are enjoying making this movie. The movie is loosly based on fact with a good dose of humor. I know this film did not do well in theatres but is one of the films that anyone would like. The action is well done and there is no CGI. If you like the Vietnam genra of films rent this you will not be dissapointed.
