Swamp Thing
"A romp in the swamp! One whole lot of monster...and one whole lot of fun!" -The Hollywood Reporter
Get ready for excitement, adventure...and slime! From explosive start to exhilarating finish, Swamp Thing is the perfect blend of thrills, chills, "winsome humor" (Roger Ebert) and amazing special effects. It's the ultimate in "fun and fright" (The New York Times).
Deep in Florida's darkest everglades, a brilliant scientist, Dr. Alec Holland (Ray Wise), and a sexy government agent, Alice Cable (Adrienne Barbeau), have developed a secret formula that could end world hunger and change civilization forever. Little do they know, however, that their arch nemesis, Arcane (Louis Jourdan), is plotting to steal the serum for his own selfish schemes. Looting the alb and kidnapping Cable, arcane douses Holland with the chemicals and leaves him for dead in the swamp. Mutated by his own formula, Holland becomes Swamp Thing -- a half human / half plant superhero who will stop at nothing to rescue the beautiful Cable and defeat the evil Arcane...even if it costs him his life!

Wes Craven lays it on thick for this flick... You can almost smell the cheddar. Which isn't a bad thing. Turn your brain off and just sit back and enjoy. Ask yourself questions like: "Is that Ray Wise slumming in this movie?" "Did we really need an annoying kid part?" "Midgets?" and "What did the comic book fans think of this debacle?"Hamlet of the Swamps - Gaucho
I put the title as a joke. Really, if you are expecting Shakespeare or the level of his depth, please gloss over this pick. If you want a movie that fits into your Sunday afternoon, post-nap frame of mind that is silly, goofy, full of action, and little intelligent dialogue: this flick is for you.
Other than the goofy attempts to maintain some drama (random scenes of swampie screaming in the woods), this really is an oppurtunity to blow stuff up in Florida. Not a terrible aspiration, mind you, but it isn't the highest aim ever of a filmaker. Good, mindless fun.So-so throwback attempt from Wes Craven - Coconut_Willy
It's easy to understand that most filmmakers were heavily influenced by the type of movies that they saw in their youth and many of them have attempted at some point or another to revive certain styles. Here, Wes Craven goes back to the monster movies of the '50s/'60s with mixed results. Films like this one are usually successful when the old style is updated not only with modern means at the technical level but also at the story level. Such is not the case here; it seems to me like Craven took a typical '50s storyline and just shot it in the '80s. That did not do it for me. It's nowhere as funny as if it truly was a '50s film. The storyline is not too bad, the cast is good enough doing as good an acting job as possible with a rather lame dialogue. The soundtrack is OK as well as the camera work. The rubber monster suits that are so hilarious when you look at an old sci-fi film seem totally out of place here. It is a fun film for the most part that I would recommend to fans of monster movies only as even Craven fans (like me) might not really enjoy it.
The transfer to DVD is of good quality but contains no extras.
