Cop Land
Exclusive Director's Cut
This tense crime drama explodes with nonstop excitement and riveting star performances! Sylvester Stallone (Spy Kids 3-D: Game Over, Driven) stars as Freddy Heflin, the sheriff of a place everyone calls "Cop Land" - a small and seemingly peaceful town populated by the big-city police officers he's long admired. Yet something ugly is taking place behind the town's peaceful facade. And when Freddy uncovers a massive, deadly conspiracy among these local residents, he is forced to take action - and make a dangerous choice between protecting his idols... and upholding the law! Robert DeNiro (Analyze That!, Meet the Parents), Harvey Keitel (Red Dragon, U-571) and Ray Liotta (Identity, John Q) head an incredible cast in this critically acclaimed and unforgettable motion picture!

Normally I'd say it would be a cold day in Hell when Stallone would turn in a performance that I'd watch over and over again (apart from Rocky 1). But this is it.
Think Mafia, minus the Mafia, and substitute corrupt cops. Stallone plays the role of the backwoods sheriff, caught between his need to fit in and his desire to uphold the law. Harvey Keitel and Ray Liotta complete the ensemble and also give memorable performances. This film, as my review title suggests, is surprisingly good!Outstanding Cast - Gregg
There’s no question that this story about a town of corrupt cops is a bit overdone and that the story has a few implausible turns and that there are at least a few plot holes but it is still an enjoyable film to watch. The performances are almost universally good, even Stallone is fine with the exception perhaps of the last ½ of the film.
Besides Stallone the cast includes; Robert DeNiro, Harvey Keitel, Ray Liotta, Peter Berg, Robert Patrick, Janeane Garofallo, Michael Rapaport, Annabella Scioria, Cathy Moriarty, John Spencer and Edid Falco. Due to the films budget all of the actors worked for scale.
Writer/Director James Mangold presents an intriguing if not compelling story which the small town of Garrison, New Jersey and New York City which is just across the bridge. Sly the small town Sherriff always wanted to be a big city cop but a hearing deficiency held him back. The other major element to the film is the mob like structure that these cops have adopted.
This was the sophomore effort from James Mangold after “Heavy” and from this he has since go on to write and direct a number of effective films the most notable being “Girl, Interrupted” his follow up to “Cop Land” and “Walk The Line”.
The ending of the film seems obvious and inevitable which is somewhat unfortunate but still as I said earlier overall it was an enjoyable film to watch.Unjust critical slander - M.O.D
This film got a bad rep from critics, and for what? It had an incredible cast, a great, smart script, and fantastic directing. What more could you ask for? I have to recommend this film as a fan of cop movies, but most of all as a fan of solid performances, even from Stallone, who in my opinion was fantastic! Check this one out, I wasn't disappointed, and I'm sure you won't be.
