When you're a cop in a lawless town, trust no one.
A small-town sheriff (Billy Bob Thornton) teams up with New Orleans stripper (Patricia Arquette) to solve a hushed murder. The closer the lawman and his unlikely partner get to solving they mystery, the more serious the threat to their own lives. A chilling crime-thriller.

This is an entertaining film that gets tied up with more than a few questions about morality and discrimination. Set in a southern small town that is quite conservative the story kicks off with a bit of action before developing a few of the characters and the setting. Things are calm until Mona is discovered to have both male and female genitals at which point discrimination and homophobia kick into gear. Questions of sexuality nicely complicate what would otherwise be a mundane murder mystery and the plot flows well despite a few holes. Acting was surprisingly good with obvious energy between Thornton and Arquette. Both delivered well though Arquette did much better than she often does. Devane played a slimy politician well as always. Ward, Malone, and McKinnon were seriously underused in the film but supported well as did the rest of the cast. Camera work was good other than the opening chase scenes. Sets and backgrounds were nicely done and fit the film well. Dialogue was enjoyable with some great lines and sound was good. Soundtrack was interesting and well done but didn't quite seem to fit the film. Overall this is a nicely done crime thriller that adds sensitive issues to make the story more entertaining, and it works well. Good acting and a decent plot bring the film together keep things interesting. Maybe not a great film but well worth viewing if you enjoy the genre.
