Common Threads: Stories From The Quilt
"As powerful and moving a documentary as you will ever see. This one stays with you." - People
In the early 1980's, a mysterious new disease suddenly started killing young gay men in American cities. It wasn't until Rock Hudson's death, in 1985, that the rest of the country began to take notice. Common Threads tells the powerful story of the fist decade of the AIDS epidemic in the U.S. - from the first ominous warning signs and the government's failure to respond, to the vibrant protest movement that was born as a result. Starting with five life-stories chosen from the thousands memorialized in the NAME Project AIDS Quilt - the Olympic athlete; the recovering drug addict; the conservative naval commander; the gay street activist; and the 11-year-old suburban boy with hemophilia - the filmmakers skillfully weave intimate memories with contemporary news footage to tall an epic and moving story of love, loss, anger and healing.

Stories from the quilt was made more than 20 years ago, but is still very pertinent in this day and age. The quilt was started when people began dying of AIDS and consisted of quilts made honoring the fallen people. What is great about this documentary is that it does not preach and talks about every kind of people affected by it: gay men, hemophiliac, drug users.
What is sad today is that the with the medication available, people are not using the condom anymore since they treat AIDS like a treatable disease. It still kills but slower than before, but let's not kid ourselves, it still kills people.Outstanding document of the times in which it was made! Oscar well deserved - QueerNorth63
A tremendous balancing act showing all the sides of the AIDS crisis and both those affected and infected by the devastation. A document of such large impact and importance, all should see it. AIDS is the great common-denominator to those of us who were blissfully coming out in the late early 80's and then jolted to a halt in the middle of our sexual liberation. The stories move beyond the stereotypes and truly honour ALL those communities who have and continue to be touched by AIDS. Watch it with your kids if you have them, or recommend it to the generation born after the epidemics peak, who may not appreciate the devastation / fear / paranoia / injustice / hypocrisy, of the times, that this film eloquently brings to light.A Must See - Dave4
What a beautiful movie. It's basically a bunch of interviews of different people whose lives have been impacted by AIDS. I know it sounds depressing but it's beautifully done. It is touching and yes your eyes may moisten a little but it's also inspiring. This is another one of those wonderful films that too few people see. Don't hesitate to rent it.
