Director David Lynch ups the weird ante with this "psychological fugue." Fred Madison (Bill Pullman) is a jazz saxophonist who is married to the beautiful Renee (a brown-haired Patricia Arquette). After receiving menacing videotapes taken from inside their home, the couple begin to worry. Fred’s fear is compounded when he meets a mysterious man (Robert Blake) at a flamboyant party. Fred wakes up to discover that Renee has been murdered, and Fred is convicted of the crime. Trouble is, he doesn’t remember anything from that night. Sitting in a jail cell, he undergoes a miraculous transformation, waking up as Pete Dayton (Balthazar Getty), a young mechanic. When Pete meets a dangerous client’s sexy girlfriend, Alice Wakefield (a blonde Arquette), a passionate affair blossoms that threatens to expose Pete.

one of the worst movies ive ever seen! - YPlovesmovies
Im not opposed to slower paced movies, however 0- this was just BRUTALLY painful!! I could not get past 30min of it and had to turn it off. Was it the script's fault, or just really bad acting? i dont know, but i know after 30min i could not handle anymore of the main characters' speaking few words followed by a painfully prolonged staring at each other, and you sit there and wonder to yourself "why are they staring at each other for 10 seconds and not speaking? is this symbolic of something?" yeah i think so... symbolic of BOREDOM!!
and then the guy just magically transforms into a different person in his prison cell? haha aweful..
Let me clarify - am open minded, i do rent indie and arthouse movies and i do try to udnersatnd and follow them, but this was just NOT well done period! if you want to talk "weird" movies - rent Mullholand Drive. that was easier to understand and the story was very twisted and smart.Bad dreams brought to life. - filmgeek
This is a very underrated film. Like many David Lynch films, this has the logic of a dream, and has about the same kind of flow.
The actors underplay everything, almost like all the life has been sucked out of them. This enhances the moodiness of the film, and keeps a gloomy tone consistent throughout.
Every time I watch this movie, the structure reminds me of a snake eating its own tail, the movie has neither a beginning point nor an end point, and yet there is still a sort of closure.
This is why I like Lynch as a director, his movies are not mainstream, very arty, and very very dark.
Recommended only for those who enjoy gloom, doom, and chaos.I'm Lost - Steady
Somebody tell me what this film was about. I like David Lynch and where his brilliant mind can take us in movies but I just didn't get this one. I know it's me, because the film has a great cast.
There's a murder and a search for the truth and then people who are dead start showing up and people in prison are replaced and characters become other characters. Not unlike Lynch but I couldn't put it all together.
