Gung Ho
When East meets West, the laughs shift into high gear!
When Michael Keaton persuades a Japanese auto firm to reopen his hometown's defunct auto factory, he's a hero.
But when the Japanese hire him to enforce their policies among his American co-workers, he goes from hero to zero in seconds flat.
It's manpower vs. horsepower on the assembly line. Salami vs. sushi in the cafeteria. And a head-on cultural collision that's enough to upset the world's balance of laughter.
See how really crazy things can get when Michael Keaton's in charge in Gung Ho - another great comedy by director Ron Howard.

Worthwhile movie - crazyboutmovies
Although looking quite dated, this is another wonderful film from Ron Howard. The story deals with intercultural tension, misunderstanding, and eventually reconciliation.
It is also a journey of a man who, through all the mistakes he made, arrive at understanding not only of others, but of himself.
A very worthwhile movie to watch, although the once mighty Japanese economy is now replaced by that of Communist China, who probably cares a lot less about product quality, but that's another story....A forgotten gem well worth a rental... - Zoodles
Oddly enough the premise of this movie is very pertinent today with the globalization and outsourcing we are seeing in many industries!
Gung Ho is about a small town which is going through rough times after the auto plant closed. Since the plant was the primary employer for the town everything is going downhill with the plant closed. Enter Michael Keaton's character who makes a proposal to a Japanese auto company to take over the plant.
A clash of cultures ensues with misunderstandings and some xenophobia on both sides. There is a lot of laughs and yet some drama here.
It is an interesting film from the standpoint of people from differing cultures learning to adapt to one another. It is also interesting in seeing where American auto manufacturing went wrong in this time period. If some of the brass from G.M., Ford, Crysler et al had of taken some of these lessens to heart maybe they wouldn't be in the position they are now.
At any rate Micheal Keaton does his usual quality job here as the plant foreman and town spokesman who must tread carefully between pleasing his new bosses and keeping the plant in the town and yet not alienating himself to his buddies and trying to get them to adapt to the changes in their jobs.
While not a classic by any means this is a very enjoyable film.Gung Ho - Goliath
A feel good movie that is worth a look.
Michael Keaton trying to save a small US factory town that is going tdown the hill by convincing the superior Japenese Auto makers to come over and re-open the auto plant and save their lives.
Work and cultural differences provide hijinx on all levels.
If they released this movie in this area, it would not fly too well. Not a bad look see.
