The Journey Of August King
"Terrific Performances!" -Los Angeles Times
This passionate, uplifting celebration of the human spirit received outstanding acclaim from critics coast-to-coast! Jason Patric (Speed 2: Cruise Control, Sleepers) is August King, a young man whose life is changed forever when he risks everything to help a beautiful woman (Thandie Newton-The Truth About Charlie, Mission: Impossible II) on a courageous- and very dangerous -search for a new life. Desperate yet determined, the two set out on a harrowing journey towards freedom...and find in each other the strength to overcome incredible odds! Also featuring Sam Waterston (Law and Order) and Larry Drake (L.A. Law), The Journey Of August King is inspiring entertainment you don't want to miss!

This is a film that deserves to be more well-known than it is. Jason Patric does a great job as the simple farmer, beset by immediate concerns, who must nonetheless set aside his own problems in order to make a difficult moral choice. It's a sad yet brave film... not something for a night when you want light entertainment. But well worth watching when you're in the mood for a work of real substance. The Journey of August King - jeannie_c.
Of all the movies I have seen in the past year, this is one movie I saw twice and would rent again. Jason Patric and Thandie Newton are great in the lead roles. As a runnaway slave, Annalees does not expect help from anyone, especially since it is against the law for anyone to offer such help. And in the beginning, August has no intention to break that law. Yet some laws are just not right even for the most law abiding citizen, and this is one of those laws. And because of that, as viewers of this journey, we are routing for them all the way. It's interesting to see Thandie play the role of Annalees, and as Christine, in the more recent movie Crash, although both parts call for strong gutsy women, which she does very, very well. In this film, Jason Patric is the hero, and it makes you wonder how many would or could have been this brave under the circumstances. He helps Annalees to freedom, yet the process proves to be his own freedom he is pursuing as well. I watch movies because I want to humans interact under various circumstances, to see and feel the human spirit, and know that I am connected with others through these thoughts and emotions. I want actors who can portray life so naturally I can easily forget they are acting. Patric accomplished that in this film, and many actors have fallen short in many other films. For that alone, I would recommed The Journey of August King.
