A Very Deep Film - TheDandyist
Understand something about The Prophecy: it is not an epic, because for all of its strong points it will not appeal to all moviegoers across the board. However, for those interested in the genre or the actors, The Prophecy should not be missed -- indeed, it should be studied. The plot essentially involves a battle between God's Angels for His affection; it seems that a group of dissenting Angels led by the Archangel Gabriel are annoyed that God favors humans and opened the Kingdom of Heaven for them. The story itself is rather absurd (the dissenting angels seek to possess the soul of an evil human learned in war to lead their forces), but excusable because, after all, modern religion is no more fact than ancient mythology -- and in either realm anything is possible. What is interesting is the characterization of God's Angels, and the notion that they are not pure, altruistic and heavenly as we commonly believe. The dialoge is simply fascinating, and the actors are wonderful, and this is where the film really shines. The most intriguing character is Lucifer, the expelled former angel, who offers a description of hell unlike any other: hell, he explains, is not fire and brimstone, but rather an eternity without Him. Talk about shattering your belief system. Give this film a try -- it will become a favorite.Paradox. - filmgeek
I highly recommend this movie, but not for the movie itself. There is really only one reason to watch this, and that reason is Christopher Walken.
Walkens' performance as Gabriel is astounding and really fun to watch. He is one of those gifted actors who can turn even the cheesiest of material into cinematic gold.
Another standout is Viggo Mortenson in the relatively small role of Lucifer. Mortenson is suitably creepy and definately memorable in the part.
This movie is not a great movie by any stretch, but certainly worth watching for those two performances alone.

Wow - that was surprisingly not-terrible. The movie starts with an awkward scene or two that just don't feel right (Eric Stoltz needed a few scenes to warm up, I think), but as the movie goes along, it moves from bearable to watchable to almost enthralling. Somewhere along the line, I realized that I was not only believing all this nonsense, but I was actually feeling pulled into the action. It wasn't corny. It wasn't embarrassed by itself. It was actually telling a semi-serious story, and it was doing it well. I completely did not expect that to happen.
For some reason, I always assumed this was some awful cult B horror movie, along the lines of Phantasm or something, but actually, it's a neat little supernatural mystery, with a good, solid script, convincing performances, and a shocking lack of cheese. Christopher Walken makes all this stuff work almost single-handedly, until Viggo Mortenson shows up over half way through the movie and instantly steals the show from everyone. (Trust me on that - you'll know the scenes when you see them.)
This story could have gone wrong so many ways, but I was surprised by how proficient and professional everything felt. It's a good movie, with some genuinely creepy moments, some well-filmed and tense action scenes, and an admirably ambitious attempt to take an angel war seriously. The movie feels confident, doesn't wink at its audience, and has the balls to go for it. And you know what? It just about works.
