I rented this film after reading Eszterhas' autobiography. In the book, he laments his screenplay, as a self-inflicted, bitter tone that treated it as a very dark comedy. He also claims that it was a very poor screenplay, that probably shouldn't have been made. His blatant admission to the film being a box office bomb is (self professed) partly to blame from Eszterhas re-editing the film. Regardless, I still thought I should view the film. Eszterhas was right. The film was not that good. I couldn't get through the entire thing and found myself rolling my eyes at this "mockumentary". While the premise sounds interesting for insiders, it is exactly the opposite, one the film starts. Eszterhas' book contains true stories behind the film, that you would find more interesting (such as Arthur Hiller wanting to take his name off the finished product). If there's any indication how bad this film really was, it won 5 Razzies.Lost Opportunity But Decent Enough - CharleyJames
"Burn Hollywood Burn" has so much potential yet it keeps missing the mark by just a little bit.
Hollywood poking fun at itself offers enormous opportunities for wit, witicism and inside humor. Blake Edwards did a great job with the genre in "SOB" and "The Party," (with Peter Sellers). But for the most part, "BHB" keeps missing the mark.
Eric Idle is wasted, the script sending him off into cartoonland, and if Richard Jeni chewed the scenery any hard he would have needed a Rolaid (which is why stand-up comics generally don't make good actors; Robin Williams is a notable exception). But Ryan O'Neal is wonderful as a bastard producer.
There are enough good moments and strong cameo's that it's worth spending 86 minutes watching what might have been.boring hollywood boring! - koth
I didn't even finish this film. The premise sounded funny, and the cast includes Eric idol and Stallone. It had a few celebrities who made fun of themselves, but the was the only real entertainment (aside from Idol being his normal weird self).
Personally I can not recommend this film unless you are an insomniac and need a little help getting some shut eye.
