Showgirls
Leave Your Inhibitions At The Door...The Show Is About To Begin.
Seduction, passion and power struggles unfold when the creators of Basic Instinct, director Paul Verhoeven (Starship Troopers) and screenwriter Joe Eszterhas (Original Sin), blow the lid off the seemingly glamorous world of Las Vegas showdancing to create one of the most controversial - and shocking - films of all time.
Nomi Malone (Elizabeth Berkley) has what it takes to make it as a Las Vegas showgirl -- what she doesn't have is a way in. To survive, she accepts the only job available: lap dancing at a seedy club. And when she meets Cristal (Gina Gershon), Vegas' reigning showgirl, Nomi wants everything she has -- including her boyfriend (MacLachlan). And as Nomi dives deeper into the world she so desperately desires, a rivalry between the two women heats up. The battle for the spotlight becomes so fiercely competitve that it drives Nomi to desperate lengths -- and devious heights -- for fame in Sin City.

I was reviewing some movies I loved, realizing I was only giving good/great reviews, so to be fair, I decided to write a review for a movie I detest.
What angers me now about this movie is how they get away with trying to say it's a comedy. This is revisionist history to try and save what is possibly the worst movie ever made.
Having been someone who did watch 'Saved by the Bell', I was interested to watch, just to see Elizabeth Berkley naked I'll admit. I ended up regretting that I could never get the 2+ hours back in my life. This is absolutely not worth the time.
I've seen others say they enjoy it better watching it as campy cheese, but I can't in good faith recommend this as it was not intended to be this way. This was meant to be a serious movie, and failed so horribly that I cannot condone giving it a better grade by changing the genre. I hate that I have to give it a full star, it's just that bad.

Well, if you're going to make a bad movie, it might as well be so bad, it's campy cult classic fun.
I'm with blubarry, this film is enjoyable, if you approach it as a comedy, and a lesson in bad over-acting.
You have to give Elizabeth Berkley some credit. She is fearless in this flim, and pushes this character as far as anyone could. You'll be embarrased for her, but I think you'll be intrigued by her. WIth the right director, I think she does have something to offer.
It's hard to believe that no one in the movie realized how bad it was as they were making it. But it's clear they are all taking this seriously. Which just adds to the camp value in my opinion.
As for the NC-17 rating, it's there more for the full frontal nudity that poor Berkley engaged in, showing off that brazillian wax. There's also alot of boobs. But the sex scene is actually pretty tame.
Ridiculous, silly, over the top, and so much fun!Eat that burger, nomi - eat it!! - kandyjaxx
I watched this movie ages ago and was completely shocked . . . by how much I enjoyed it!
Sure, the plot is trite to the point of irrelevancy - and yet still completely incomprehensible; okay, they cast Kyle MacLachlan as a lust object (eewwhrr); the acting is horrible (even Gina Gershron can't sneer enough to get us to buy that she's in on the joke); the choreography looks like it was cut from Alyssa Milano's Teen Steam for being 'not hot enough' and it's all so frightfully forced that it's hard to believe anyone gave someone money to make this . . .
And yet . . .
Well, I've just never seen someone eat a cheeseburger with such drama! On the hood of a pickup truck! On a cliff! With the sun setting over the horizon!
This story of the transformation of a 'sweet girl hoping for a big break in the big city' into a 'pastie-wearing ninja' is an American classic. Really.
I'm renting it again, to see if it lives up to my wince-inducing, gobsmacked memories. I'm sure it'll be just as stupendous as it ever was.
