Dogville
A quiet little town not far from here.
Nicole Kidman, Paul Bettany, Chloe Sevigny, Stellan Skarsgard and Lauren Bacall star in director Lars von Trier's experimental meditation on small-town America. When a mysterious woman claims she's being chased by hoodlums and needs a place to hide out, the residents of Dogville come to her rescue. But she must prove herself worthy of this privilege and win the trust of everyone. And in the end, her arrival may be the town's undoing anyway.
This is a highly original but difficult work. The 3-hour film takes place completely in a soundstage with only minimal props and set.

Nicole Kidman is outstanding as are all the other players. It was like going to the theatre without leaving home. This is a powerful story that shows how we all have both good and evil within us and all it takes is the right set of circumstances to bring it out.
The play starts out with Kidman's character "Grace" being given asylum by the town of Dogville, from an unsavory set of gangsters . But Grace's idyllic asylum soon begins to descend by what appear to be harmless steps, into a personal insane asylum which leaves her no choice but to conclude the play as she does.
There is plenty of "meat" in this play for fruitful discussions and the more people that see it, the better. It seems a bit like a kind of adult version of "Lord of the Flys", with our baser natures seeming to win out in the end.
Highly recommended!!Requires the viewer's investment - DDB3
This is an excellent movie, but might have fared better in the public eye if it was more accurately described as a filmed stage play. It is excellent, with every player contributing and participating with total believability and authenticity. It is uncomfortable watching how things unravel, and the denouement is surprising (one couldn't help anticipating what would happen and findnig oneself very very wrong). There is an assumption in a way that this is Tom's movie, wherein he can indulge all of his ideas and beliefs albeit with tragic outcomes, but the last scene completely reverses that to one in which Grace is the self-indulgent one playing with her life philosphies. Watch it.Brecht would be proud - ArtsGuy
Dogville is film’s ultimate proof that Brecht’s alienation theory is a powerful technique is storytelling. The barren set only aids in the story-telling so that the viewer can concentrate on the events, actions and emotions that are being explored. It is a story of people who are ruthless and self-serving - an emotionally wrenching tale that will change the viewer for ever. A must for everyone to see.
