Orca: The Killer Whale
Terror Just Beneath The Surface
Sleek intelligent beautiful...and bent on revenge. Producer Dino De Laurentis (King Kong, Ragtime) and director Michael Anderson (Around The World In 80 Days, Logan's run) join forces to present the rousing action-adventure tale of Orca: The Killer Whale). It's the story of one powerful being against another: a strong, determined fisherman (Richard Harris) versus an equally determined killer whale. When the giant whale's pregnant mate is maimed and killed by Harris, the whale seeks vengeance - smashing boats, attacking a seacoast village, and eventually luring his human adversaries to a final confrontation on the marine creature's own arctic turf. Charlotte Rampling, Will Sampson, and Bo Derek (in her feature film debut) also star in this seafaring epic brimming with nail-biting suspense and spectacular special effects.

Fairly amusing piece that tries to show how smart Orcas are but in the meanwhile (and quite oblivious to them) makes the audience feel stupid by making the most ridiculous film. Richard Harris plays Quint.. I'm sorry, that's wrong, he plays Captain Nolan, a fisherman who catches sharks for a living, but is lured by the big catch, and tries to catch a killer whale. When the capture of a female killer whale goes awry (don't ask) it's mate (don't ask) goes on a rampage (don't ask) and starts STALKING Captain Nolan (Don't ask). Soon, Captain Nolan realizes that they have something in common (don't ask).
Pretty amazing filmmaking here folks.
I got to tell you though, the beginning (with the whale noises and nothing much else) is pretty haunting and the end credits (with the most godawful song) is pretty entertaining.Doesn't quite stand the test of time - fotoguy
I rented this movie because I remember it scaring the beejesus out of me when I was 5 years old. I had already seen Jaws, and was thoroughly terrified of anything in dark water (prompting numerous shark-related trips to my parents' room in the middle of the night!).
Now 32, I've seen enough good horror movies to be less than impressed viewing this as an adult. The nostalgia factor is there, but the whole movie is pretty laughable. On the good side, Richard Harris definately pulls the movie through, and the mechanical whale is not too bad either. As for the bad, there are too many trippy musical interludes, the whale is just too damn smart, I'm sick of the ubiquitous Indian offering sage advice, and... SHINING A BRIGHT RED LIGHT ON SHAMU DOES NOT MAKE HIM LOOK SCARY!!!
That being said, it's worth watching for a laugh. The movie poster is pretty cool too.ORCA - waynie_wonder
This movie is great because of Richard Harris the drunk. HE is at his best in this film and it is great to see him one on one against the whale. Ofcourse it's corny and a re-hash of Jaws and Moby Dick but if you go in with a no expectations it won't dissapoint.
