The Tunnel
Set in the 1960s, decades before the fall of the infamous Berlin Wall, The Tunnel chronicles one of the most daring escapes to freedom. East German championship swimmer Harry Melchior's (Heino Ferch) defection entailed willpower and a forged passport. But to get his sister Lotte and others out, he has to team up with a motley crew to dig a 145-yard tunnel to East Berlin -- and, of course, ferry everyone back to safety.

This is one of my top 20. Riveting from start to finish. Wish it had been in wide release as it is a fantastic example of foreign cinema at it's grittiest.
Saw it in a festival several years back and it still comes to mind frequently. One to watch again and againThe Tunnel - Liz2
Heino Ferch gives an amazing lead performance in a film that in every moment of its 2 1/2 hours is riveting and filled with tension. This is an enlightening view into the true plight of people separated by a wall, as they struggle to overcome oppression and help their loved ones escape to freedom by building a tunnel from West to East Germany. To see it depicted without the over glossy emotional drama typical of many lesser films is refreshing. Great performances, a fascinating story and well thought out direction gives this film, which doesn't have much going on except talking and digging, an intelligent and engrossing edge.Excellant - Tits
