Fellini: City Of Women
"Phenomenal! A Gigantic Motion-Picture Spectacle." -Vincent Canby, The New York Times
In City Of Women, Fellini makes no secret of his obsession with women. Cast again as Felllini's favorite alter-ego, Marcello Mastroianni is brilliant as a modern-day Don Juan set adrift on the stormy seas of middle-age and feminism. The film opens with a train entering a leaf-framed tunnel - Fellini's first homage to the erotic metaphors of American movies that have become landmarks of our romantic fantasies. This is the first of many allusions, from Dante to Fred Astaire, marking City Of Women as another great work from the master.

Fellini's circus of women - JasonTHX
Fellini displays his most joyful wickedness sense of style here, this film is akin to the spirit of his 'Amarcord'. 'City Of Women' is glorious, rousing, carnevalesque, robust, delirious fun.
You can almost sense Fellini's glee behind the camera throughout.
Marcello Mastroianna gives an underrated performance as a man who's part devil, part noble, part victim, and part scared little boy as he is thrust into a phantasm society of very liberated and outspoken and gregarious (Fellini Style) women.
With a ringmaster Like Fellini at the helm, 'City Of Women' is a wonderful, jaunty, delicious ride.Dowright awful - Thor
This was a non-sensical, very long movie. Practically the entire movie is a dream and just like a dream it makes little sense, jumps around, and is basically very boring. You wind up watching the entire thing because you have invested too much time before calling it "quits".
The irony is that although it is an Italian movie, it gives the impression it was dubbed over in Italian.very good - JR@ottawa
This is the typical standard Fellini. Circus, costumes, baroque, women and Mastroiani.
Fellini's dreams, nightmares, questions and reactions on feminism, mixed with childhood reminiscences are linked , not necessarily with an obvious logic. If you are a Fellinist, you will love this film
