Interesting movie. Really like this movie because it was mostly action and adventure but with a touch of scarry mythological creatures to keep you on the edge of your seat. Like seeing all of Van Helsings cool gadgets even if they are a little modern for the time period. Great plot line and good acting. The Star Of This Movie Is The CGI/Animation - bwod
This movie fell into my hands because I was impressed by a short preview of it which I had seen recently on another dvd. The scene that got me was the were-wolf, coming out of the body of the man who had been bitten and was now possessed. It scared the heck out of me and my wife, so we decided to take a chance, even though the reviews had been lack-lustre.
Surprisingly, "Van Helsing" was very entertaining. It is an action/adventure flick with enough scary characters and scenes to keep things moving and not boring. This is not a Gothic horror film like Dracula or Frankenstein. It is an updated version of those films but with a touch of James Bond in it. There is a bit of humour as well, for comic relief.
For sheer mindless entertainment, it works well. For lovers of the genre. One and a half thumbs up.go and SEE IT - E-Man
What an excellent matinee movie! Aside from a bit of weak dialogue and a question I have about one of the major action sequences this James Bond/Indiana Jones meets the monsters of Universal Studios really delivered the goods for me. Pure escapism and mind-boggling special effects from start to finish. I felt that the film remained true to the spirit and heritage of the great classic Universal flicks with a clever nod to the Hammer Studio vampire films of the 60's. Van Helsing is not a horror movie so much as it is a monster/action movie. I particularly enjoyed the portrayal of the Frankenstein monster character. I also felt that the sensuality of vampirism was deftly handled considering the makers were going for a PG rating. I can't decide whether two of the very final scenes were an homage or just plain pop-corny but given the spirit of the film I guess they worked. Van Helsing far surpassed my expectations so much so that I plan to go back to the theatre and see it again...something I haven't done in a very, very long time. Try to catch the DLP version it is visually stunning. I hope for a sequel!
