Hammers Over The Anvil
A Young Boy's Hero. A Married Woman's Desire.
Russell Crowe stars as East Driscoll, a bachelor horsebreaker who won't settle down. He becomes the idol of Alan, a young boy with polio who dreams of riding just like his hero. As Alan struggles with the hardships of growing up, he meets Grace, an older English aristocrat whom he develops feelings for. The situation gets further complicated when the married Grace falls for the much younger East and Alan, unwillingly, is caught in the middle.

Review of film; Hammers Over The Anvil - ricepudding
This production is set in the countryside of
Australia which surrounds a small farming community.
The people in the community...their daily lives,
occupations, romances etc. are seen through the
eyes of a young crippled boy. His vision and
interpretation of events are keen and insightful.
His gift of observation and the ability to record
what he sees almost off-sets his affliction...but
of course not in reality. He forgets his troubles
when he becomes immersed in writing. The boy
portrays such a strong, resolute figure on the
screen that he could become an inspiration to afflicted people in real life.
This is not a startling movie, most of what it
has to say has been said many times before, but
it is a peaceful movie, it bobs along under the
Australian sunshine, not saying much but offering
little nuggets of wisdom, personality, and nice scenery. Scenes where horses are involved are
quite dramatic.
If you wish for a relaxed, peacful evening, where
you can sit back and be carried along, then this
is for you.
Worth three stars, perhaps three and one half.
