Citizen Ruth
Meet Ruth Stoops...One Bad Mother
Meet Ruth Stoops. She's homeless, dumb as a cinder block and loves to get high huffing spray paint. Life would be dandy if it weren't for one tiny problem-she's gotten herself knocked up for the umpteenth time, and it seems like everybody's got an opinion about what she should do-from an angry judge to God-fearing Baby-Savers to radical lesbian feminists. And Ruth just wants to party!
Laura Dern stars in an award-winning bravura performance backed by a stellar ensemble cast including Burt Reynolds, Mary Kay Place, Swoosie Kurtz, Kelly Preston, Kurtwood Smith and Tippi Hendren. Written and directed by the team who brought you Election and About Schmidt, Citizen Ruth is a hilarious, provocative look at what happens when a sperm meets an egg and sparks fly.

This movie had my boyfriend and me in near hysterical jolts of laughter at several times. It's definitely a "dark" comedy, and at its finest. The dialogue will have you literally rewinding the film asking yourself "did she really just say that". It's also inspiring, and has a message. The story is about a young, drug addicted mother names Ruth who finds herself in quite a predicament when she learns of an unexpected pregnancy. When the media gets wind of her situation, people from both spectrums of the pro-life and pro-choice mediums try to persuade Ruth to keep or abort the baby.Satire that fails in my opinion - vadim
This movie is not for everyone. Each character (except Ruth) is a caricature, but it was very hard for me to identify with any of the characters or care what happened to Ruth. Ruth had to be one of the most annoying and frustrating characters captured on the screen. However, Laura Dern does a fine job captureing the selfish, immature Ruth. Definetely Payne's weakest film. Id suggest to see any one of his other films such as Sideways, About Schmidt or Election. The Abortion Issue - FilmJunkie
A really interesting movie about the battle over a woman's right to choose.
Laura Dern plays a pregnant drug addict who is pulled back and forth between the Christian pro-lifers and the liberal pro-choicers. Each group tempts her with money and drugs to choose their way until Ruth has become an idea more than a person.
The film is pretty low-budget, but Payne gets his point across and Laura Dern is very good and very different as the unsympathetic character of Ruth.
Payne is the master of the anti-hero, whether is be the females of this film or 'Election', or the males of 'About Schmidt' or 'Sideways'. He makes us care for people that we don't like, his talent is a true testament to showing people as they are and not as we would like them to be.
'Ruth' opened doors for Payne to explore his talent further and that is a truly admirable feat.
