Tai Pan
Love. Passion. Betrayal.
Based on James Clavell's internationally best-selling novel, Tai Pan is an unforgettable adventure during the early China trade when epic adventurers carved dynasties out of barren rock and the opium trade pitted father against son, and friends against one another. For trader Dirk Struan, the silver and opium exchange is almost impossible to resist, but everything comes to an action-packed head when he is forced to choose between the ones he loves and profit beyond his imagination.

The James Clavell historical novel Tai Pan, is rich in detail, personal histories and interpersonal, inter cultural relationships. The stormy relationship between father and son is deeply detailed as is the wise path taken by Dirk Struan's bastard son; Gorden Chen. The bohemian lifestyle of the immortal Aristotle Quance and a host of other characters are portrayed in true Clavell style, richly and with a flavor that enthralls the reader.
This feature; while loosely based on the novel, is nowhere near the fine work of fiction that I have loved for decades. The characters are mostly pale representations of Clavell's works, other characters are left out altogether and the rest are simply people in place with no history or detail.
I leave now with just this to say, this movie has butchered a fine work of art and the director can feel free to hang his head in shame at this parody and apologize to one of the greatest fiction writers that I know of
